School visits

Bringing Learning to Life!

For hundreds of years Hexham Abbey was a place of education as well as of daily worship. Today we continue the tradition established by the Canons of Hexham Abbey by encouraging schools and other groups of young people, to visit the Abbey as part of their exploration of our community, our country and our world.

We hope you will:

  • Experience the awe and wonder of the unique atmosphere of Hexham Abbey
  • Find out about the fascinating history of Hexham Abbey which spans over 1300 years
  • Discover what happens today in a lively parish church
  • Learn more about how Christianity is practiced in our modern world
  • Use the Abbey as inspiration for their creative imaginations
  • Reflect on their own life experiences
  • Have fun!

We offer exciting, hands-on, activity visits. You can come for half or a full day, eating your picnic lunch on the cloister lawn or in our education room. Alternatively, you could just pop in for a shorter time as part of a cross-curricular visit to the wider area.

Education visits to the Abbey are lead by the Education Officer, Toni Bush, an experienced teacher, and members of our education team – volunteers with experience of, and training in, working with children and young people.

You are of course welcome to visit with your group independently. But the Abbey is a busy place with lots going on so please call our office to book your visit in to the Abbey’s diary to avoid disappointment. We would appreciate a small donation for the visit.

What do teachers and pupils say?

‘Fantastic – all the children were engaged fully and loved every moment’

‘I cannot praise the content, format and delivery enough…I would recommend Hexham Abbey without hesitation to any other schools wishing to visit.’

‘The variety of learning experiences ensured that all children were motivated and engaged – they haven’t stopped talking about it since.’

‘We really enjoyed the day and came away full of ideas!’

‘My favourite of the day was the Night Stairs because I like the wibble wobble bits.’

‘Going down the crypt was amazing. I couldn’t stop telling my dad about it when he got home.’

‘This has been the best trip ever!’
